must have heartbeat

in my now seemingly futile search for a job, i applied for a minimum-wage opening at a local electrical engineering company. i’m no electrical engineer, but the job i applied for was an assembler. just one of the guys on the assembly line who puts stuff together. basically like playing with legos. according to one of their recruiters at a local job fair, this is a perpetually open position because turnover is so high. highlights of the requirements for this job:

- high school diploma or G.E.D.
- reading, writing and math skills
- manual dexterity and ability to concentrate

in other words, they’re looking for a living, literate person (it didn’t even say which language) who has use of his or her hands. i’m thinking this job is perfect for me. well, SM, i say to myself, think again. before i even had time to take a breath after submitting my application online, i received an email from the human resources department that said:

"We appreciate the time you took to apply for the Assembler position, and wanted to inform you that we have decided to continue our search for other candidates."

what! not even an interview? but i didn't get a chance to prove my hands are in working condition. and i writes good! really, i does! give me a chance!

maybe i’ll have to look for something requiring less concentration.
